Future Proof Your Career

by | Nov 4, 2015

Making a career choice that actually fulfills you is one thing, future proofing your career is another… where do you even start?

Whatever you do, you need to love it.  Simple.  But most folk don’t know what they want to begin with.  I talk about this in another blog post so what I want to focus on here, is if you are in a career or business that you feel is your future, how do you make sure that you don’t become one of the statistics of jobs that will become redundant and extinct?

We are in an amazing time of our lives.  There is opportunity for you, particularly if you have skills and experience and knowledge in a particular subject.  This means that you can join the multi-billion dollar info-preneur industry (this means selling information products) and do it part-time for extra income whilst you still work.

If you are not a big fan of technology, now is the time to get on board and learn.  There are roles that haven’t been invented yet because of tech moving so fast, so you can literally invent yourself a new career (like I have done with my multiple businesses).  The time to act is now.

Here are my top 5 tips to make sure you are always in work and you get noticed for your shining brilliance:

  1.  Understand your strengths and what you can deliver (in terms of results and outcomes)

This is not just knowing that you are “good at X”, it’s also being able to talk about what you have produced with clarity and impact.  E.g. during my last project at X or with Client X my role was to implement a Personal Brand strategy for the whole of 2015 which included creating a marketing and social media plan, a PR campaign to align with events and speaking engagements, organisation and creative direction of photo shoots.  The results so far have ensured the engagement on social has increased by 750%, 3 fully booked workshops and a best selling book for Client X.

See what I mean?

Not knowing your strengths and the value that you can deliver will put you behind other people in your market who could be attracting the attention of your prospect / client / potential employer.

2.  Your network is Your net-worth.

Start showing up at events, meet-ups and ensure that you stay connected to your industry contacts.  Opportunities are often discussed in situations that aren’t necessarily advertised, and new prospects may be looking for exactly what you have to offer, but if you don’t show up and aren’t seen, they won’t know that you exist.

3.   Commit to learning

We all know that knowledge is power and if you commit to learning new technologies, or relevant skills for your industry then you’ll be ahead of your competition.  This can be formal education or learning from a mentor.  As long as you are continually improving and not staying stagnant, you will find your skills become more transferable and also, your competency increases.  As does your value!

4.  Know your exit strategy or have a plan-b.

Over the years, my position has been made redundant 4 times, so I know what I’m talking about when it comes to staying relevant and resilient – what would you do if your job finished today?  And if you are in business, do you have a clear prospecting, marketing and sales strategy and a pipeline of leads you can tap into?

5.  Invest in a mentor or coach who can help you achieve your goals.

To get to the level you want to, we need to invest to take us there.  I’ve invested thousands of dollars into my personal development to get me where I want to be and I’ll continue to do so.  You can take the long road and learn yourself or you can take a faster, easier route that will also give you a better outcome in the long run.  Especially as you’ll not make the mistakes that could slow you down or stop you in your tracks.

If you aren’t into technology, aged-care may be your way to go if you want to stay as an employee.  It’s a growing industry (healthcare) but there is also the rise of the freelancer and micro-business.  Curious about what you may be able to do in the next few years?  Jump on a call with me and I’ll talk you through some options, it will probably be the best 30 minutes you spend on your career right now (and it’s totally free).  Book in HERE.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the future of work and the what you would like to invent as your career.  Post in the comments below.

Love S xx
