What is Styling? 

There are some differences between Image Consulting and Fashion Styling.  Professional Styling has become an important role within the Fashion industry and styling doesn’t include only fashion.  Both property styling and food styling are important and common within professional styling (and let’s not forget hairstyling!).  It’s easy to get confused between the roles that people play in the industry.

An Image Consultant will work with an individual or group to assess Body Shape, Personal Style and Colour.  They will understand fashion trends and cycles as well as specialities, such as corporate uniforms, etiquette and personal branding.

A Fashion Stylist works with a client (e.g. TV, Editorial / Magazines) to create a look, usually by finding a location, model and then shoot a scene – it’s the stylists job to come up with the creative looks as well as finding the clothes for the brief.

A property stylist will choose furniture and soft furnishings to create a look for a room or a whole house when a vendor wants to sell a property. 

Food stylists are cooks who can create dishes (also from their own recipes or from a celebrity chef) and then style the food to be photographed for books and editorial / advertising.
